The Port of Antwerp plans to launch the world’s first hydrogen tugboat. Antwerp has ordered this tug with the goal of becoming carbon neutral in the port in order to transition to more renewable sources of energy.
This new tug will be built by Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) and will fully comply with EU Stage V emissions regulations. CMB plans to deliver this boat within the next 2 years. View a video of the tugboat in action here.
According to Port of Antwerp’s CEO, Jacques Vandermeiren:
“Together with our partners we are preparing for the future in a constant search for innovative applications and opportunities. With this world-first we aim to further prepare the way for alternative fuels such as hydrogen, in order to realise the transition to alternative, renewable sources of energy.”
CMB has previously designed a hybrid engine for the Port of Antwerp which is being used in a passenger ferry which launched in 2018. The benefits of using hydrogen as the key to sustainable shipping is evident and the Port of Antwerp hopes to continue in this direction towards sustainability.
