Airbus “Bird of Prey” Designed to Inspire

4 years ago #Event

Airbus, a European multinational aerospace corporation, designed a new type of airplane prototype made to inspire the next generation of aeronautical engineers.

Introducing the ‘Bird of Prey’ – an eye-catching contraption inspired quite literally by birds; more specifically, eagles and falcons!

What makes this hybrid-electric turbo propeller plane unique?

  • Individually controlled feathers on the tips of the wings
  • Controllable tail for better precision in-flight
  • Aerodynamic arch found naturally in the body of these birds of prey

The design was unveiled at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom. The 'Bird of Prey' is based off of other existing emerging aerospace technologies but is not meant to represent an actual aircraft concept. The main purpose was to create something new and striking to get young people inspired to become the next generation of aeronautical engineers.

One of the priorities for the aeronautic industry is to make flying more sustainable and lessen the impact on the environment. Looking ahead, the next generation of engineers need to be enthused to reach these goals. Airbus states that learning from nature, as done in this case, can teach valuable lessons about design and come up with new concepts for engineering.
